Traditional talk therapy is generally past-oriented, rehashing painful events from the past. Typically working hand-in-hand with a doctor, therapy involves assessment, diagnosis, and potentially pharmaceutical intervention for symptoms of the problem.
Life coaching works on the holistic and foundational principle that we are endowed with our own internal power to create change - and that change starts in the present moment, by going deeper than symptoms and developing an awareness of the thoughts driving the emotions. By becoming self-aware of the subconscious drives behind our emotions, triggers, and thought/behavior patterns, we can learn how to rewrite the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves.
